# 83 2nd letter in surname could be an e or an a.
# 86 the m in the surname has a line above it.
# 101 last letter on surname could be a w.
# 104 the 1st letter on the surname is obscured by the tail on the letter
above.
# 124 the ? could be the letter m or w
After # 190, there is a Franz Zeppenfeld and a line is drawn across the
whole column. No information is entered in the other columns. The
numbering continues with 1.
There were several abreviated names on this list.
I had some neighbors who are from Germany that helped a little with the
deciphering of the German names on this list.
Correspondence: 5/00, updated 10/1/00 Passengers #25-31 HOCHMOTH/HOCKMOTH/HOCKMUTH
Beverly Sharon sent the following:
Pictures of the Hockmuth family can be seen at HOCKMUTH 1 and HOCKMUTH 2
The home the family lived in while they were in the "Community of True
Inspiration", now known as the Amana Colonies in Amana, Iowa, is still
standing and is being used as a Guest House for visitors in the Amana
Colonies. Hockmuth Home
SEVEN ORIGINAL HOCKMUTH'S
THE FAMILY CHANGED THE SPELLING OF THEIR NAME TO HOCKMUTH IN AMERICA
ERNST WAS THE ONLY ONE THAT KEPT THE ORIGINAL SPELLING.
CARL HEINRICH (HENRY) HOCKMUTH
Henry's birth name was Carl Heinrich, but he was known as Henry after
coming to America. Henry, his wife Maria and five children emmigrated
from Reinsdorf, Saxony, Germany to a communal-style settlement made
up of seven villages in Amana, Iowa known as "The Community of True
Inspiration". The people of the community, known as "Inspirationalists",
contributed their labor to the communal enterprise and, in turn, the
Society took care of all of their food, shelter and clothing needs.
The Hockmuth family was living in poverty and when Henry heard the
Inspirationalists were promising a better way of life and free passage
to America to anyone who wanted to join their community, he decided
to move his family. When they arrived they were assigned a home in
the Colony of Main Amana and Henry went to work in the Amana Woolen
Mills. On March 13, 1881 his wife died suddenly. Soon, Henry began
seeing a young widow, Hulda Hölzel, with four children. In
February 1882, they wanted to marry, but the Elders of the Community
would not grant them permission. They gathered up their combined
nine children and moved to Des Moines, Iowa where they were married.
Henry worked for Scheuerman Brothers Woolen Mills and also had a small
farm on which he raised produce and flowers to sell. In later years,
he posed for a photograph depicting him reading his Bible. The picture
won several awards and it is rumored throughout the family that it hung
in the Louve in Paris, France (this has not been confirmed). Henry
was affiliated with his church and religious work until the time of
his death. He was living with his son, Herman, when he passed away
on Jaunary 1, 1939. He was 92 years old. He is buried in Laurel Hill
Cemetery in Des Moines, Iowa.
Note: The Community of True Inspiration eventually evolved into what
is now called the Amana Colonies. The people voted to become a free
enterprise system in 1932, thus ending a 100 year lifestyle. The Amana
Colonies now welcomes 1.5 million visitors each year, and the seven
villages are now a National Hictoric Landmark.
AUGUSTE MARIE (KLAUNMÜNZER) HOCKMUTH
Maria's birth name was Auguste Marie, but she was know as Maria here
in Iowa. She married Henry Hochmuth in Germany sometime around 1867.
She and Henry had five children born in Germany...she gave birth to her
sixth child (a son, Ernst) in February 1880 in the Amana Colonies, but
he died six days later. On March 13, 1881, Maria died of heart and
kidney failure. She was 35 years old. She is buried in the Amana
Cemetery in Amana, Iowa.
ERNST HOCHMUTH
Ernst worked for Scheuerman Brothers Woolen Mills in Des Moines, Iowa.
He married Sarah Alice Moler. They had five sons (Orville, Ralph,
Herman, Walter and Harold) and two daughters (Amber and Daisy). Ernst
and his wife are buried in Chapel Hill Gardens Cemetery in Des Moines,
Iowa
ANNA MARIE HOCKMUTH
Marie's birth name was Anna Marie, but she was known as Marie. She
worked most of her life as a homemaker. She married Ira Richards in
1895 and they had one son (Carroll) and one daughter (Irene). They
were divorced in 1907. She married Rudolph Schwartz in 1909 and they
had two sons (Raymond and Donald). After the stock market crash of
1929 her husband lost his job so Marie went to work as a housekeeper
for a neighbor family. But stress caused this marriage to end in
divorce, too. She lived in Des Moines until moving to Cedar Falls
to live with her daughter. She passed away on November 3, 1963 of
arteriosclerosis at age 92. Marie is buried in Glendale Cemetery
in Des Moines, Iowa.
CARL HEINRICH (CHARLEY) HOCKMUTH
Charley's birth name was Carl Heinrich but he changed it to Carl Henry.
No one in the family is quite sure how he got the name Charley, but it
is the name he was known by and it is the name on his gravestone. He
worked as a printer for Kenyons Printing Company in Des Moines, Iowa.
He also raised and sold produce and flowers. Charley married Ora
Grinstead and they had three sons (Paul, Adrian and Richard) and six
daughters (Ruth, Wilma, Mabel, Margaret, Vivian and Sara Ann "Sally").
Charley passed away November 6, 1954. He was 80 years old. He and
his wife are buried in Chapel Hill Gardens Cemetery in Des Moines, Iowa.
CARL HERMAUN HOCKMUTH
Herman's birth name was Carl Hermaun, but he was know as Herman. He
was a streetcar conducter in Des Moines, Iowa He married Mary Lindsey
and they had three sons (Eldon, Cecil and Price) and two daughters
(Marie and Jeanette). Herman passed away June 20, 1967. He was
91 years old. He and his wife are buried at Glendale Cemetery in
Des Moines, Iowa.
ERNST PAUL HOCKMUTH
Paul's birth name was Ernst Paul, but he was know as Paul. He worked
as a gravedigger. Paul never married. He passed away in the early
1950's but I haven't been able to locate where he is buried.
