Transcriber's Notes:
* An asterisk indicates an error on the part of the original recorder, not
the transcriber, or is used to call your attention to additional information
in the transcriber's notes.
? Indicates a letter or number which could not be determined due to the
condition of the manifest or handwriting of the original recorder.
Blanks indicate no information was entered in that column.
The last column was actually entitled 'Remarks relative to any that may
have died or otherwise left the vessel during the voyage.'
There were two handwritings used. The first, very neat and practiced,
was used in the first six columns and also the 7th column for
Bickerstaff and May. The second one, clear but child-like, was used for
the luggage and also for the last passenger's name and age.
The original List had people grouped together with brackets and the
group's luggage written next to the bracket. I entered a group's
luggage by the name of the first person of that group. For example,
Krieg begins one group. Gost begins the next, and so on.
(no luggage) on the original list was indicated with a short horizontal
line.
Capital letters are those of the original record taker with the
exception of column 3.
I abbreviated Male (M) and female (F).
The year 1836 was not written on the manifest but is correct.
Passenger numbers were added to aid with referencing.
* Davenport- The R is raised and meets the left side of the D in
Davenport. Period added to indicate first initial.
* Hallowe?- ? looks like 'n' or 'u'.
36, 54 Bickerstaff & May - The word 'Havr' written immediately after surname,
probably to indicate that this passenger disembarked in Le Havre as stated
in the last column.
40 Judicie- No last name given. No sex entered.
55 Ver?ecker- ?=t or b. Havr written after surname, perhaps to indicate
this passenger disembarked in Le Havre although this was not stated in
the last column as it was for the passenger above her (May).
59 Duchesne- The entire sixth column was full of ditto marks after the
initial New Orleans. 'Left in Haver(sic)' was written over the ditto
marks probably because the 7th column was full. Pos-Leachis was clearly
written. My only guess would be that this means 1 Posnet Leeches (or
Lychees?), posnet meaning a pan or container.
62 Heshu?l- ?=e or l. Columns 3 through 6 left blank.
Correspondence 06/27/01 passenger MUNCH
My great grandfather, Johann Anton Munch came to the USA in 1836 thru
the PORT of New Orleans on the Ship Lyons on June 7, 1836. He settled
in Beaver, Pike County, Ohio. In the spring of 1839 he returned to
Germany and married Maria Elisabeth Jung in June. They returned to
the USA that fall and went back to Beaver. They had 11 children, one
of which died as an infant, 3 moved to Portsmouth, Ohio, one married
and stayed on the farm, and the other 6 moved to Chillicothe, Ohio.
In the early 1920's, most of them left Chillicothe and moved to
California, Red Bluff, I think. My grandfather was the last born,
April 1862, named Valentin Munch(Minch). He settled in Portsmouth
around 1878 and had 3 children, 2 dying as infants and my father,
Earl Louis Minch, was born February 28, 1905, and died July 25, 1967.
