this column to conserve space on the list.
* The captain's name, Wiborg, is spelled two different ways; however, the
signature of the captain is written Wiborg rather than Wyborg.
27-30 Schoffcke - written this way by the captain. See correspondence below
from a descendant who gives the spelling as Schoppcke, with an umlaut
over the 'o'.
49 The surname looks like Mettenhagan but it could also be Metteshagan.
57 Bottcher - There is a definite umlaut over the first vowel in the surname.
64 Harker - There is a definite umlaut over the first vowel in the surname.
73-79 Schroder - There is a definite umlaut over the first vowel in the surname.
80-81 Schoffcke - written this way by the captain. See correspondence below
from a descendant who gives the spelling as Schoppcke, with an umlaut
over the 'o'.
111-114 Patc?e - The surname could be either Patche or Patcke.
116-122 Lu???? - The surname is extremely hard to decipher. There appear to
be six letters in the name, and none of the letters in question extend
either above or below the line. They could all be a, o, or u.
136-139 Kruger - There is a definite umlaut over the first vower in the surname.
140-144 D?w??e? - The surname is very difficult to decipher but it looks like
Dowdey. (see correspondence below)
156 Lie?a?d - The surname could possibly be Liera?d or Liena?d.
164 Brei?bach - The surname looks like Breitbach.
165 Deddenhause? - The surname could be either Deddenhausen or Deddenhauser.
177 Rassinger - The surname is written Rafsinger - normally "fs" is written
to denote the double s.
178-179 Lissinger - The surname is written Lifsinger - normally "fs" is written
to denote the double s.
180 L?????r - The surname looks like Ledebichr.
184 Ha?bach - The surname could possibly be Hatbach.
188 G??ch - The surname looks like it might be Gotch or Gosch.
196 Maria Wilms - Her age is very faint due to film quality, but it looks
like it could be 20. The country which she came from is impossible to
read but I know it's not Prussia.
197 ?al?kaus? - The surname is very difficult to decipher. The first
letter could be C or E.
198 Ar??? - The surname is very difficult to decipher due to quality of
film. One or two of the letters are too faint to read at all.
200-206 Stroh?? - The surname is very difficult to decipher due to quality of
film. (see correspondence below)
Correspondence 8/29/99 passenger #140 Dumdei
My great great grandmother's family and her sister's family came
over on this voyage. The name D?w??e? is more than likely Dumdei.
My g.g. grandmothers sister Wilhelmina and her husband Frederick and one
child were on this voyage. I am not sure if the others were Dumdei's but
it is very possible. P.S. The captain misspelled the name Warnke-Warnecke
and Weckwerth-Wegwerth.
For further information you may contact Tim Warnke
Correspondence 8/29/99 passenger #200 Strohm
I was reading the immigration ship list and found my family.
There was a ? following the last letter in the name. I thought if this
page is ever updated that you could add the correction so it will be
easier for others to find. On Bark Johanna Elise, the name Mathias
(and family following) Stroh? is STROHM. Also a thanks for hard work
that has went in this process!!

Correspondence 12/9/99 passengers #19-22, 27-30, 73-81 Freundt
I admire the work that you have accomplished on transcribing the
passenger list of the Johanna Elise. The ship carried four of my
Great-Great Grandparents and two of my Great Grandparents, with
many of their brothers and sisters. My direct relatives include
the names of Schoepke (Schöpke) and Schroeder (Schröder).
Indirect relatives include Wegener (see correspondence below for Wegener)
and Scharnow. The ship carried a total of 25 of my direct and indirect
realtives. Interesting also is the fact that 84 of the 216 passenger,
including my relatives, immigrated from the three neighboring villages of
Sophienthal, Zechin, and Kienitz, which are located just north of
Frankfurt, Oder.
As I look at the departure list of the Johanna Elise from Hamburg,
which is dated 15 April, 1856, I see what I identified as the Schoepke
name is probably spelled Schöppcke.
Please email Mark Freundt for further information
about his ancestors.
Correspondence 11/07/02 passengers #116-122 Lu???? Lenth
First of all congratulations on having accomplished such a challenging
task. I am not sure if I can help you solving some of the remaining
mysteries but I think that the family of Gustav and Dorothea Lu????
travelling on Bark Johanna Elise might be the name LENTH. I know that
people carrying that name have immigrated from the Northern parts of
Germany to America settling in Iowa (Farmersburg, Monona, Postville,
Elkader, Garnavillo etc.) around the 1850ies or 1860ies. One of them
was called Johann LENTH, so maybe he is the 23 year-old son on the
passenger list. I would appreciate any further information about the
origins of the LENTH family in the USA. Please contact: Thomas Lenth
Correspondence 01/16/2004 passengers #31-42 Wegener
I read Mark's comments (12-9-99)regarding his relatives. I believe my Wegener
ancestors were on this ship also. My cousins disagree and say they were
on the SS Gellert. However, that ship was built in 1874 and our Wegener
relatives (now spelled Wegner) were in Wisconsin by 1855 or 1856. Some of
the names on the manifest were somewhat different and the age of one was
maybe incorrect. My Great-grandfather was Gottfried Wegener, born in 1828,
which would have made him 28 or 29 on this trip [he is listed as being 39].
His wife would have been the same age as Wilhelmine Wegener on this trip.
His wife's name is listed as Wilhelmine Wegener and we know Gottfried's
wife's name as Caroline (is it Caroline Wilhelmine Wegner? or Wilhelmine
Caroline Wegner?) Their son, Carl, was less than 1 year old on this voyage
(born in about December of 1855 I think). There was a Carl Wegner on this
voyage of age 3 months. Gottfried's parents also were on this ship I believe
and were Maria Wegener and Carl (Carl Christian?) Wegner---of age enough to
be parents to Gottfried and probably of other younger Wegners on this ship.
We know that Gottfried had a brother named August (and there is an August
Wegner on the ship). The other children (ages 6 yr to 23--August was 13)
could be Gottfried's brothers.
Anyone researching this family please contact me at Lois Esther (Wegner) Koppelmann
