Correspondence March-15-2005 Passengers GELDING
My ancestor on my mothers side was John Gelding. John Gelding and his wife
Mary Ann Gelding arrived on the Java in Sydney in 1853. They had 13 children
(that I know of).
John and his brother William (arrived on Telegraph) opened the first large
nursery in Sydney NSW in the suburb of what is now Dulwich Hill and
conducted a large seed trade in the Sydney Markets. Many of the original
trees in Sydneys Hyde Park and the Botanical Gardens can be attributed to
their endeavours. Two large houses from the Gelding estate are still in
existence, and a street has been named after them. Further information is

Java and would like my email address linked. I have my family tree with Family Tree Maker
- but have not figured out how to attach it to your page as yet.
My ancestors are Robert & Elizabeth Nelson, children George, Caroline,
Catherine & John who died on the voyage. Robert & Elizabeth settled in
Christmas Creek NSW where they had four more children. Their family grew
up in Kempsey and the surrounding areas, including Macksville & Nambucca Heads.
Their first child born in Australia, William, was my great grandfather.
