DISTRICT OF NEW YORK – PORT OF NEW YORK

I, Charles William Kennedy, Master of the S.S. Germanic,do solemnly and truly swear that the following list or Manifest, subscribed by me and now delivered by me to the Customs of the Collection District of New York is a full and perfect List of all the Passengers taken on board the said Steamer Germanic at Liverpool from which Port said Steamer has now arrived; and that on the said List is truly designated the age, the sex, and the occupation of each of the said Passengers, the part of the vessel occupied by each during the passage, the country to which each belongs, and also the country of which it is intended of each to become an inhabitant;and that said List or Manifesto truly sets forth the number of said Passengers who have died on said voyage, and the names and ages of those who have died.
Sworn to this 17th day of March 1879 before me (illegible signature, followed by the signature of Chas Wm Kennedy.

List or Manifest of all the Passengers taken on board the SS Germanic, whereof ??Kennedy is Master, from Liverpool, burthen 3150 tons.

*An asterisk indicates an error on the part of the original recorder, not the transcriber. The ? indicates letters or words that cannot be read due to the quality of the original document.
There were no births or deaths on this voyage, therefore the birth/death column has been eliminated
54 The third letter of the first name could be "r" or "v"
61 The last name was written and then crossed out, then re-written. Both begin with "Br". The rewritten version could be Brady or Bradley
66 The middle letter appears to be an "O" or "A". Thus, last name is either "O'Brian" or "Brian".
75 Last two letters of last name could be "ny" or "sy": Boiny or Boisy
78 Last name is either "Ardley" or "Andley".
81 Last name is either Dervy or Dewy
117 Country of origin was originally written as "Ireland", then crossed out and replaced by "USA"
118-138: Under "Country of origin" column, all have ditto marks. But am not sure if the ditto marks are meant to repeat "Ireland" which was crossed out and replaced by "USA" in 117, or to repeat the USA origin. Since almost all these names look to be of Irish origin, I suspect they are from Ireland. The recorder may have intended to only correct No. 117, and forgot about the ditto marks.
126 Could be either McKernan or McKirnan
139-140 "England" was originally written in country of origin, but was crossed out and replaced by ditto marks.
141-142 Only have ditto marks in country of origin, but not sure if this means "England" (the country crossed out in 140) or "USA", as in 138 (but which is also problematic and may have been intended as "Ireland" as explained in note for 118-138
143 "England" crossed out and replaced by "USA"

270 "Ahsin" appears to be a Chinese given name, not a surname.
272 The last letter is somewhat obscured by a number written over it, but appears to be an "s".

At end of "steerage" section, on the right, is the signature of the Captain, Chas Wm Kennedy.
The column under "Age" is divided into two columns, labeled Year and Months.
In the Steerage Section, the column for months is empty.
In the "saloon" section, there are two additional numberings, one of them right next to individuals' names, and one in the column labeled "months". Thus,for example, no. 184, I. Alexander, has the number 1 right after his name, in the same column, and there is also a "1" for him in the column for months.
The numbering in the column for months is in consecutive order, with one number for each individual, but the numbers in the "name" column are only for individuals traveling alone or for families: for example, no. 189, A. Tobin, does not have any number following his name, though he does have a number in the "months" column; instead, the Tobin family(no. 89-193) is bracketed and the number "6" appears after no. 191, F. Tobin). The total in the "names" column is 71, while that in the "months" column is 93.
