Correspondence 8/23/00 passenger #32
Ahoy!
I found ancestors of mine on a ship that you transcribed. Thank
you. They are on the SS State of Georgia arriving at New York out of
Glasgow on Dec. 28, 1888. Passenger #32, Mrs. Arch.d Waugh is my
great-great-grandmother, born Ann Steel. She is the wife of Archibald
Hunter Waugh, a coal miner who had sailed to the USA earlier (I haven't
located his ship yet). The family left Whitburn, Scotland, to relocate
to Southwestern Pennsylvania. On the ship with his mother and a few of
his siblings is George Waugh, my great-grandfather known as "Jordy."
Jordy married Mary Elizabeth McClure in 1902, had nine children, and
worked in the coal mines all of his life.

Thanks again for the great work that your group does!
Charles Waugh
George Moodie
Capt. .George Moodie was the first caption of the famous tea clipper "Cutty Sark". Later, he worked for the Stateline and sailed the Atlantic Ocean for 11 years.
In 1891 he retired from the sea and eight years later settled in the Wemyss, Fife, Scotland area where he was born. He spent about ten years in Methil, Fife, Scotland and then retired to MacDuff House in Auchtermuchty, Fife and died at the age of 95.
His three sons also had a love for the sea. One son, James, worked for Pennsylvania Railway Line Steamers, and was transferred to New York. Another son, George worked for the Methil Docks in the Fife area. and his third son (my grandfather) Alexander was a ship master and engineer and sailed to many world ports during his career. He also had four daughters. He had eleven grandchildren. How many descendants there are now I don't know, having just started my family search. The son, James who died in a accident in New York is the one I am looking for.
