Correspondence 3/5/02 passengers #32-35 Vetter
I found my great, great, great grandfather and grandmother and my great,
great grandfather and his sister on the list of passengers. They were
listed as #s 32, 33, 34, and 35. There names were:

Sophia Vetter, wife
Herman Augustus Vetter, son
Jane Rosalia (Sally) Vetter, daughter
Herman Augustus Vetter's son, Herman Clement Vetter, b September 21, 1855 d
April 10, 1932, (my Great grandfather) added an s on to the last name for
some reason and the family name is now Vetters.
I would like to find out more information about them and their families
before they left Germany. They were from Hamburg, Germany. I am in Europe

Correspondence 07/06/2004 passengers #20 & 21 Kohnel
Robert and Ernestine Kuhnel settled in Galveston, Texas. He was
organist at the Lutheran Church. Unsure of the number of children
however my grandfather, Ernest Kuhnel was born to them in 1871. Both
Robert and Ernestine Kuhnel died in the 1870's. Cemetery unknown.
Ernest moved to Houston after the 1900 storm. He married Hattie Dean
on June 7, 1898 in Galveston. Robert Kuhnel is included in a book of
outstanding citizens of Galveston in the 1800's. MARCIA INGRAM
**STEINHAGEN, CHRISTOPHER FRIEDERICH CARL (1814-1893). C. F. Carl (Charles) Steinhagen, early Texas cabinetmaker, was born on December 21, 1814, at Warkstorf (Warekstoff, Warckdorff), Mecklenburg, Prussia, and was baptized in the Evangelican Lutheran Church at Goldebee, the son of Hans Heinerich and Maria Dorothea (Behncke or Benecke) Steinhagen. In 1844 Carl was a wagon and wheelwright apprentice in Konigsberg, Prussia. He arrived in Galveston from Bremen aboard the Galliott Flora on May 21, 1849, and was naturalized in Anderson, Texas, on April 13, 1855. He was a wheelwright by trade but made wagons for the Confederacy during the Civil War. qv Charles Steinhagen and Emma Friedericke Schatz were married on November 27, 1850, in Houston and settled in Anderson, where he built his home in 1853. Twelve children were born, three died young, and the surviving children were educated to speak and write in English and attended churches of their choice. B. A. Steinhagen Lake in Tyler County bears the name of his eldest grandson. C. F. Carl Steinhagen died on February 19, 1893, and was buried on February 21, 1893, in the Independent Order of Odd Fellows Cemetery at Anderson, where his monument still stands.
