Transcriber's Notes:
The use of a ? indicates a word or letters that could not be read, due to quality of
original document.
Rio de Janeiro, Bahia, Para, Santos, Maranhao and Pernambuco are all in Brazil.
While this ship is dated Dec 12,1888, the date in the Sworn Statement looks like Dec 14,1888.
The column "Intended destination or location" was used only for passengers not in cabins.
The column "Date and Cause of Death" was written over, and replaced by, "Place sailed from".
Where there is no number given in the baggage column, it indicates that the luggage for that
passenger was included, through the use of a bracket, in the baggage count given for the last
person above him/her to have a number listed.
* Passenger #2, the occupation Drummer refers to a traveling salesman.
* Passenger #8, name is either Teldin or Tildin.
* Passengers #9,11,17,21, and 27, "+ wife" crossed out, and replaced by "Mrs".
* Passengers #16,17, surname could be Powell.
* Passenger #24, name is either Fidder, Fielder or Felder.
* Passenger #31, Griffith may be preceded by the initials W B.
* Passenger #35, baggage count number appears to be a circled 1 or a circled 11.
* Passenger #36, given name may be Martenici, Martunci, or Martinici; surname may be Giovanni
or Giovanili.
* Passenger #37, may be Priestly, Prestley or Porestley.
* The following information is from page 373 of the volume "Movimento de Passageiros
Norte-Americanos No Porto do Rio de Janeiro 1865-1890" authored by Betty Antunes de Oliveira
and published privately in Rio de Janeiro in 1981. The asterisks indicate names that differ
from the names on the actual passenger list above. This information has been submitted, and
translated from the original Portuguese, by Mr. David Asprey with the following description:
It is a 500-odd-page typescript of which the vast bulk is a tabulation of extracts from
local Rio de Janeiro newspaper reports of passenger movements - but only transcribing the
identified North American passengers. It seems that quite a few copies were produced in
1981, probably in xerox form.

Departure for New York 19 November 1888
vessel Finance, US Flag
master, Ed C. Baker
NAMES OF PASSENGERS:
William Tilden and wife
Rev. G. A. Landes, wife and four children
Charles Cowell and wife
Geo Fox
T. J. Jarvis, American Minister, and wife
*Capt. Dunsmore
*Lottie Lane Slade
*W. Catuna
*W. Gells
*B. Price
*W. McCue
Mrs. Moore and one son
*H. McCall
*W. Porter
* Capt Dunsmore appears as Dinsmore on the actual passenger manifest.
* Lottie Lane Slade may be a combinant form of the names of passengers #19, Miss L Lane,
and 38, Henry Slade.
* W. Catuna has the initial of N on the passenger list.
* W. Gells probably refers to passenger #3.
* B. Price is listed as passenger #4, Mr N. Price, on the ship's manifest.
* W. Porter does not appear as a passenger on the Finance when it reached New York.
* D. Asprey's notation as to W. McCue and H. McCall: H. McCall and W. McCue are, I suspect,
your Mr. Chas R McCue and Mr Geo McCue. However, when the Finance arrived (in Rio) from
Santos on 15 Nov 1888, the passengers listed included W C Porter and W McCall.
*While not included in this newspaper listing, a Miss Lovie Fielder was listed as arriving
in Rio de Janeiro, from New York, on board the Finance 6 October 1886. Finance passenger
#24, Miss L F??der, could be Miss Lovey Fielder.
