Transcriber's Notes: Passenger 24, McKay had following note on register: (also appears spellt MacKay on register) Passenger 155, McKay listed as a Cabin Passenger NOTES: The ship was chartered by the Duke of Sutherland in order to help clear tenants from his lands in West Scotland. The passage of 39 days brought them to Pictou at the end of June. Immediately upon their arrival they were welcomed to Canada with a tax - a head tax. Two families took a boat to Prince Edward Island, where tax officials wanted them to pay a head tax a second time. Their luggage was seized when the beleagured people refused. Finally after correspondence between the Duke of Sutherland, customs officials and various others, the PEI authorities were given a cut of what had been collected at Pictou from them.
This annotation appears on the list:
"Margaret Morrison having failed to appear after the ship was cleared out the following parties are now substituted in their stead vizt: Mrs Ann Sutherland, 80; Fairly McKay, 24; Ann MacKay (sic), 18; Jean McKay, 26.
I Dugald McLachlan do declare that the above is a true statement of the passengers on board the Ellen from Loch Laxford.
Declared before me this 30th June 1848, signed William J. Johnson, Sub. Coll. H.M. Customs"
Correspondence 15 April 2001, passengers Gunn All members of the "Gunn" families who were passengers on the barque Ellen settled in South Granville, Prince Edward Island. It is one of my lifelong goals to find out how the three "heads of household" -- McKenzie, William, Benjamin -- were related. William is my great-great grandfather. Skip Colcord Benjamin Gunn Family 1. Benjamin Gunn, likely the son of Donald Gunn and Barbara Morrison, born in Badcalle, Eddrachallis, Sutherland, Scotland, November 17, 1820. He died March 5, 1904 at 83 years and is buried at South Granville. He married Flora McKay, born c. 1822, who died Jan. 12, 1905 and is buried next to her husband. Children (1861 census; 2 females & 1 male under 5; 2 males & 2 females 5 - 16): a. Donald Gunn, born c. 1849 in Scotland, likely the Donald Gunn listed as a 32-year-old farmer in the 1881 census and married to Mary E., 29, born in New Brunswick. One-year-old child, Flora A., likely named after her grandmother. The 1881 census also lists Elizabeth Gunn, 45, born in PEI, living in this household; not sure who she is. b. Kenneth Gunn, born c. 1852 in PEI, listed as a 29-year-old, single fisherman living with his parents in 1881 census. Likely the Kenneth Gunn buried at South Granville, d. April 7, 1925 at 72 and wife, Jane Parsons, d. October 2, 1940 at 95. "Asleep in Jesus Blessed Sleep." Children: Margaret Jenneh, b. Aug. 9, 1878 at Pleasant Valley; Moriah May, b. Nov. 12, 1882 at Hope River & bapt. April 9, 1883 at United Church, Kensington; Flora Jane, b. Jan. 20, 1884 at Trout River. c. George Gunn, born May 15, 1856 in PEI and baptized June 9, 1857 at the Presbyterian Church, Kensington. Listed as a 24-year-old farmer living with his parents in 1881 census. d. Barbara Gunn, born March 1, 1858 and baptized Jan. 22, 1861 in the Presbyterian Church, Kensington. e. Jessie Flora Gunn, born December 1, 1860 and baptized Jan. 22, 1861 in the Presbyterian Church, Kensington. f. Flora A. Gunn, born c. 1862 in PEI, listed as 19 and living with parents in 1881 census. g. John Gunn, born c. 1865 in PEI, listed as a 16-year-old student living with parents in 1881 census. h. Christopher Gunn, born c.1868, listed as 13 in 1881 census. McKenzie Gunn Family 2. McKenzie Gunn, born c. 1797 in Scotland. A MacKenzie Gunn married Meron McKay c. 1822 in Shiggra, Eddrachillis, Sutherland, Scotland. He died March 7, 1870 at 73 and is buried next to his wife, Margaret McKay, who died Feb. 11, 1871 at 74, in South Granville. Children: (1861 census lists 1 female & 1 male under 5; 1 male 5 - 16; 1 male 16 - 21; 1 female & 1 male 21 - 45; 1 female & 1 male 60+). a. John Gunn, b. April 3, 1825 in Shigra, Scotland. Perhaps the John Gunn who maried Mary McKay Jan. 29, 1852 on PEI. Likely the John Gunn listed Lot 21 in the 1861 census with two daughters, one under 5, the other between 5 - 16. Children: Margaret Gunn was born November 1860 to John Gunn and Mary McKay; baptized Jan. 22, 1861 at the Presbyterian Church, Kensington. b. Mary Gunn, b. October 20, 1826 in Shigra, Scotland.
