Passengers 219-222 Name originally recorded as Tabst: Correspondence added 3 April 2000 To Whom It May Concern: I am very delighted to share information on Conrad, Catherine, Lina, and Louis. Louis was my great-grandfather. I never knew him but I knew his wife, my great-grandmother. She lived to be 101 and was a rarity in her time. I could boast having a great-grandmother when most people my age didn't have all their grandparents. She was my main source of information and my inspiration to finally document the family history. I knew when she was gone, our link to our rich German heritage would be gone. Conrad Pabst (February 13, 1843-May 31, 1923) and Anna Katarina Miller Pabst (February 16, 1847-August 29, 1931) were from a small German town called GrossFelda, in the German Province of Hesse. An Air Force friend recently brought me a Hesse map. The town is still there - north of Felda, close to Burggemunden, Romrod, Alsfeld, and Storndorf. Conrad was a shoemaker in German and pursued this trade once he moved his family to the United States. The family originally left German to avoid the mandatory conscription of young men, really boys, into Kaiser's Army. They left from Bremen and arrived in New York on April 14, 1883. You'll note that Louis is listed as 7 years old on the manifest - he was really 13 years old, the right age to be trained as a soldier. I guess this is one time that the family can be grateful for the "short" gene. When Conrad and Catherine arrived, they originally started in the city of Cincinnati, Ohio. There was a family member there by the name of Phoebe Gault. She was their sponsor and got them established and started on their new life. On February 21, 1884, Conrad filed his declaration of intent to naturalized with the Hamilton Ohio Courts. The progression of this process could not be investigated further - the court house in Cincinnati was burned in a riot in 1884. Very few documents survived the fire that ensued. The 1920 federal census record indicated that the naturalization process was completed by 1888. Conrad settled in a small community north of Cincinnati called Hazelwood. He was a shoemaker and spoke no English. Catherine did learn the English language and was able to help him in his business. Their son, Louis, met a young lady named Anna Maria Keiffer, in the nearby Symmes Township. They were married at the St. John's Evangelical Church at Sixteen Mile Stand, Symmes Township, Hamilton County, Ohio on Thanksgiving Day, November 26, 1896. They moved to Cincinnati where Louis worked for a mattress manufacturer, the Gross Brothers. To Louis and Mary were born seven children - Arthur, Edwin, Helen, Norma, Marie, Irma, and Louis Carl. The Gross Brothers sold their business to Louis and a partner by the name of Ed Schaeller. They formed the Schaeller and Pabst Bedding Company in Cincinnati, continuing with the manufacturing of mattresses. Louis eventually introduced his children into the mattress business, training each of them to participate in a different part of the manufacturing process. Eventually, Louis bought out Mr. Schaeller's interest in the business and the company became known as the Pabst Bedding Company. As time progressed, the company became a part of the Spring Air Mattress Corporation (yes, the one that used Vanna White of WHEEL OF FORTUNE, as one of their spokespersons). The company remained in the family until it was sold in the mid-1990's. In 1936, Louis took his wife, daughter Irma, and son Carl, on a European tour. They toured London and the mainland of the European continent, eventually returning for a short visit back in GrossFelda. During the first world war, Louis refused to have German spoke in his home. His father never learned English, his children never learned German. Louis and Mary are buried in the Union Cemetery in Symmes Township in Hamilton County, Ohio. Conrad and Catherine are buried in the Pleasant Ridge Cemetery in Pleasant Ridge, Cincinnati, Ohio. Their daughter, Lina, married twice - first to Ferdinand Aker, and then to Albert Wohlmann. She was the mother of four Aker children and three Wohlmann children. Mr. Wohlmann had three children of his own from his first marriage. This history of Lina and her family is in the process of being developed. Thank you for this opportunity to share this information with you. If I can be of any further assistance, please feel free to contact me through my e-mail address. Mary Kay Mabe great-granddaughter of Louis and Mary Pabst
