Two hundred and ninteen Steerage Passengers, and one
(M: August Vanderoelde) Cabin passenger
and
16 Infants under 1 year
236 in all
Transcriber's notes:
1. All the passengers stated that they intended to live in the
United States; therefore, I have eliminated that column.
2. There was one death on the passage and it is stated in the
Death column on the first line, "one infant died on the voyage
the sixth march". I assume this means the death occurred on
March 6th. I have eliminated the death column since only this
one death occurred.
3. Infants under the age of one year were not listed on the manifest;
however they were counted and included in the final passenger
total as noted at the end of the list.
4. All abbreviations used in the given names were transcribed as
written.
5. The port of Havre is written on the manifest as Haver in the
second paragraph.
6. The weight of the ship that is written in the second paragraph
- the word in question looks like nyne, possibly a misspelling
of the word nine.
The following transcriber's notes are listed by the respective
passenger's numbers:
2,3. Trapedou?, Jean and Antoinette - The letter in question extends
below the line and could be g, p, q, y, or z.
4. Vander?elde, August - The surname is either Vanderoelde or
Vanderaelde.
18. Fundel?, Leopold - The letter in question does not extend above
or below the line. It resembles an r but isn't as distinct as
the writer's other r's.
25. Haberb?sh, Anton - The surname is either Haberbash or Haberbosh.
29. Karst, Matheu? - The letter in question does not extend above or
below the line and is either an s or just a flourish.
30. Karst, Eva - Her age is written as three straight, vertical lines
resembling 111 which is certainly a doubtful age. More than
likely, if she is the wife of Matheu? Karst, her age is probably 41.
41. Muller, Friedrich - His age is either 25 or 29.
42. M?rlock, Friedrich - The surname is either Marlock, Merlock, or
Morlock.
46. Kern, Johann?? - The last two letters in the given name are quite
faint and do not extend above or below the line. My guess is
Johannes.
50. Stiess, Ernst - There is an ink blob covering the first number in
the age.
56. Deihle, Caroline - Her age is either 16 or 18.
102. G???ber, Carl - The letters in question are all written the same,
they do not extend above or below the line. I do believe that
one of the letters is an i as there is a distinct dot above them.
108. Ed??ger, Wilhelm - The letters in question are all written the
same, they do not extend above or below the line. I do believe
that one of the letters is an i as there is a distince dot above
them.
109. Ed??ger, Carolin? - See number 108 for an explanation on the surname.
The given name is either Caroline or Carolina.
110. Ludwig, Margareth - Her age is either 54 or 59.
120. Baier, Aa. Mar?i? - The first given name, Aa., has the small "a"
written as a superscript. The letters in question in the second
given name do not extend above or below the line.
123. Hengel, Phil. Ad?? - The letters in question do not extend above
or below the line nor are they looped as in a, e, or o.
125. Hausermann, Ernest?? - The letters in question are run in together;
however, I believe one letter is an i as there is a distinct dot
above it.
129. Auberle, O??mar - The two letters in question both extend above
the line but are partially covered by a vertical line running down
the film. The name could possible be Ottmar.
145. Schu?ch, G. Christ - There was either an ink spot or piece of dirt
on the letter and I could not read it accurately but it could
possibly be an r.
147. Schurch, Mic?el - The letter in question is partially covered by
a tear on the original page.
151. Schock??, Michael - The first of the last two letters in the
surname extends above the line and could be either an l or t.
The last letter appears to be an e but it also has an upward
line drawn through it.
152. Li?mann, Jacob - I am not able to read the letter in question
accurately but it could possible be an s.
161,166. Ums, Catharin? - The name is either Catharine or Catharina.
173,174. ?ms, Georg and Regina - The letter in question in the surname
is too faintly written to be read accurately. The letter does not
extend above or below the line.
187. Seligmann, Johanne? - The last letter or letters are scatched over
by the writer and I'm not able to decipher them at all.
191,192. Buch?olz, Johann and Margareth - The name is either Buchholz
or Buchtolz.
196. We??ant, Joseph - One of the letters is an i as there is a definite
dot above them and the other letter is either an n or a u.
199. Lemmli?, Johanne - The letter in question does not extend above or
below the line. It could be either "a", n, or u.
200-205. Pe??t - The names are written as if the surname is Pe??t Jean
but I cannot be sure if that's what the writer meant or if
passenger 200 has two given names, Jean Pierre. Passengers 201
through 205 have their given names written directly under the
name Pierre (passenger 200). The letters in question could be l
and either e or i.
206. R??me, Marie - The writing is not distinct enough to be read
accurately. The second letter in question could be an s.
207. Becker, M?. Eva - The letter in question is written as a
superscript and the name could be either Mie. or Ma.
209,210. Peh?, Catharine - the letter in question extends both above
and below the line. I believe it to be either Pehf or Pehj. Both
passengers have the same given name and the same age.
213. ?nders?, Joseph - The first letter in the surname is either an A
or an O. The last letter looks like it could be an e with a
flourish on the end.
216,219,220. All three passengers are listed as males but with female
names.
Passengers 218 and 219, Valentin(e) and Margareth May are the
transcriber's great-great grandparents. After arriving in New York,
they ventured west to Wisconsin where they settled in Ft. Atkinson,
Jefferson Co.
