I, J.T. Smith, Master of the City of Rio de Janeiro do solemnly, sincerely, and truly swear that the following List or Manifest, subscribed by me, and now delivered by me to the Collector of the Customs of the Collection District of San Francisco, is a full and perfect list of all Chinese passengers taken on board the said vessel at Hong Kong from which port said vessel has now arrived, or that have been taken on board the said vessel at any foreign port or place, and of all such passengers now on board said vessel, and that on said List is truly designated the names and other particulars, as shown by their respective certificates.So help me God. Transcriber's Notes:
The pages on this film are not numbered so finding a particular ship can be
difficult. However, there appears to be a system of numbering the manifests.
These numbers are included in the identification of the film and reel numbers
below.
Passengers' names and ages are followed by a stamp that varies depending on the
disposition of the passenger and which is stamped across the columns.
Passengers allowed to land have one of the following stamps:
Landed Collectors order (blank with a month and day date written in) 1893 by
Insp's (blank for a name), in this case Grant.
Landed "I.T." Transit List followed by a number. These passengers are bound
for a further port.
Passengers not allowed to land have one of two different stamps:
Habeas Corpus U.S.D.C. Case followed by a number. These passengers were
probably allowed to land, but not to freely enter the country.
Refused Departed Per Steamer ______ (name of ship) _________ (date).
No of ticket is written by hand above the entries in the No of Certificate
column.
For passengers bound for San Francisco there is information entered into a
third column, here identified as Unnamed, that has been inserted between
Certificate number and Name. There does not appear to be consistency in what
has been written here, sometimes clearly a date, sometimes another notation,
but many times a number that has no obvious meaning.
There are no entries in the following columns: Occupation, Last Place of
Residence, Height, Complexion, Color of Eyes, Physical marks or Peculiarities
and Facts of Identification.
Callao is the port for Lima, Peru.
The discrepancy between the numbered passengers and the total number of
passengers is an infant who is not numbered.

11 Written on the line is "Grocer."
19 "Lee Man" is written above Ming.
39 Written on the line is "Fem," "to join her husband" and "has a Male Infant."
40 Written on the line is "Fem."
41 Written on the line is "Fem" and "with her sister #87."
42 Written on the line is "Fem" and "to join her husband."
43 Written on the line is "Grocer."
46 Written on the line is "Grocer."
56 Written on the line is "with her husband #108."
57 Written on the line is "with his mother #109."
58 Written on the line is "Grocer."
88-176 Grocer does not appear in the "Unnamed" column on the original,but is
written over the other information on the line. The space has been used
here to simplify the table.
