DISTRICT OF NEW YORK - PORT OF NEW YORK
I, F.S. Land Master of the SS City of Berlin, do solemnly, sincerely,
and truly swear that the following List or Manifest, subscribed by me,
and now delivered by me to the Collector of the Customs of the
Collection District of the City of New York, is a full and perfect list
of all the passengers taken on board the said vessel at (blank) from
which port said vessel has now arrived; and that on said list is truly
designated the age, the sex, and the calling of each of the said
passengers, the location of the compartment or space occupied by each
during the passage, the country of citizenship of each, and also the
destination or location intended by each; and that said List or Manifest
truly sets forth the number of said passengers who have died on said
voyage, and the dates and causes of death, and the names and ages of
those who died; and also of the pieces of baggage of each; also a true
statement, so far as it can be ascertained, with reference to the
intention of each alien passenger as to a protracted sojourn in this

I believe I have found my great-great grandmother, Rachel Ainsworth and her
infant son John, listed on your 1888 Passenger List for the SS City of Berlin,
dated 1 December. They were emigrating from England and bound for Scranton.
I find this very interesting, as the obituary notice for Rachel's husband, also
named John, said that they'd lived in several of the eastern states before
settling in Dalton, WA in 1890. I'm guessing they lived in Scranton (or
somewhere in Pennsylvania) for who knows how long, and then moved briefly
to Ohio, as that's where their second son, William (my great-grandfather),
was born in 1890. Then they moved clear over to Dalton, WA the same year
William was born and settled there. Dalton was in the lower Yakima Valley
in central Washington State. That is where they lived and where the elder
John died. At some point after John's death, Bill and Rachel moved to Seattle,
where they both died. Rachel was relocated so she could be buried next to
her husband in the Yakima Valley area.
I'm very blessed to have been able to find Rachel and baby John, but am very
perplexed to not be seeing the elder John anywhere on any of the lists for
the appropriate timeframe. Since baby John was just an infant, I'm guessing
that maybe the elder John emigrated to the US either in earlier 1888 or
possibly very late in 1887, but can't seem to find him anywhere. Oh, well.......
Thank you so very much for having this information available. It tells me
that, though they were British citizens, they didn't go through Canada (at
least Rachel and Little John didn't)Linda Allen
