NOTES:
The name of the ship was uncertain for some time. Joan Settle at
http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Meadows/8429/tmwlad.html (Nov 1997) said Thomas and
William OR Prince George. A private researcher, Val Holland (RHVDDDNF@aol.com), has
come across evidence fixing the name as Thomas and William. An ancestor of hers,
Jonathan Barlow, was a passenger on this ship.
Here is Jonathan Barlow's account of his journey from Yorkshire to Nova Scotia:
"I sailed from England in the ship 'Thomas and William.' We landed at the Ortness Islands.
Their people were very poor, almost naked; no coal or wood to burn. They grew very little
of corn; they have very little houses, with doors made of straw, and no windows. They make
their fires in the middle of their houses. Cows and hogs all lie by their fireside. I
bought eggs for onepence per dozen; ale, two quarts for twopence. Women plough as well
as the men. I sailed from there to Halifax; had a pleasant voyage, I stayed in Halifax
one week, but that place would not do, for the land was upon a rock; so there was no work
for a husbandman." (in George Barlow, editor & compiler, Family Genealogy Comprising the
Ancestry and Descendants of Jonathan Barlow and Plain Rogers, of Delaware County, N.Y.,
c. 1891, pp11-12)
