It was gratifying to me to find my ancestors transcribed as listed on the
Samuel.
THE BALMERS IN AMERICA TO 1737
The first Balmers arrived in America on August 11, 1832. They arrived
at Philadelphia on the ship Samuel of London, Commanded by Hugh Piercy. They
boarded the ship at Rotterdam, Holland but the ship stopped at Cowes, England
before beginning the long voyage across the Atlantic Ocean.
They were listed as Palatinates which meant they came from the German
Palatinate, a part of what is now Germany, located on both sides of the
Rhine River immediately adjacent to France. The name "Palatinates" in the
records of the Colony of Pennsylvania appears to have been used
indiscriminately for all German immigrants though there is some
distinction in these records between Swiss and Palatinates. The
determination of the original home of these Balmers must await
investigation in Europe.
The name of one of these young pioneers was Christian Balmer, born 1708,
who was 24 years old. There is a little doubt as to the name of the
other one. This list prepared by the captain has been printed in three
separate places. In one he is called Hans Michel Balmer, in another
Hans Carl Balmer and in the third, Carl Balmer.
Christian Balmer was a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of
Warwich, known today as Brickerville Lutheran Church. This congregation
was founded in 1730 by Rev. John Casper Stoever as the first church erected
in 1730 or 1731. In 1743 Rev. Stoever compiled a list of members of his

Just wanted to let you know that two of my ancestors are shown on the
page of the Ship Samuel from Rotterdam to Pa. John and Wendell Bernheisel.
I'm still doing some research and do not have alot of information yet, but
so pleased to have come accross your website. The spelling is different
on your page and the correct spelling is BERNHEISEL. John (Johannas
Bernheisel) was my Grandfather 5th Generation.

Johannes Jacob Floesser was born in late 1704, baptized in January 1705,
married Anna Margaretha Reichard in 1731, and together they emmigrated
to Pennsylvania in the summer of 1732, arriving in Philadelphia aboard
the "Samuel" on August 11, 1732. The transcriptions recorded in the PA
Archives, as well as Strassburger & Hinke, render them as Jacob "Hesser",
23, and Gretha "Fiesterin", 20. The signature sheet captured an X-mark,
with Capt. Piercy rendering the name as "Fleiser." It's worth noting
that even among literate passengers, spelling at the time was far from
standardized, and that in the case of illiterates making X-marks, the
ship's captain was making his best guess according to how the name
sounded to him. The standard rendering of the name was, and is, F-L-O
umlaut-double S-E-R. Pronunciation of the umlauted "O" varies in Germany
depending on local dialect, running anywhere between OY, EYE, and a
long A. The ages recorded were off by as much as 4 years in the case
of the Floesser couple. They were natives of the Odenwald villages north
of Heidelberg, in what was then the Kurpfalz, or Palatinate. They were
Catholic, and members of the Heiligkreuzsteinach parish. It would be
intriguing to be able to identify other passengers as being from the

Johannes "John" Brechbil is my 5th gr grandfather, he met and married
Maria Julianna Diller. They had Jakob, Anna Maria, Phillip, & Peter.
I am descended from Peter. He met and married Katharine Rorex, and
they had: Peter, Elizabeth, Anna Maria, Gertrude, William, Henry,
Catharine, John, Sarah, Nancy, & Susan. Out of these children of Peter
and Katharine's, I am descended from Peter jr. He met and married
Jane Thompson, they had Emeline, John, and Peter. Peter, Katherine's
husband, was in the war of 1812, and after he was discharged, honorably
as a third seargent, he spent the rest of his life as a farmer. His
son John is from whom I am descended. John met and married Hester Reagan,
and they had the following children, Peter, Jane, Leah, Margaret, John,
Moses, Rachel, Hester, Issac, William, Houston, Thomas, & Mary. Thomas
is my great great grandfather. Most of these people lived in Pennsylvania,
and spread to MD, TN. The children of Johann Nicklas Brechbiel have
spread very far. They are all over the United States now. I will be
happy to share more information with anyone interested in this as it

My husbands ancestors, Ulrich Burkholder (Burckholter) and his wife,
Ester (Esther Shearer) were born in Burgholden, Bern, Switzerland.
They arrived in Philadelphia on the Ship Samuel on August 11, 1732

Andreas ans Silige Stoutsenberger came from Bopfingen, Jagstkreis,
Wuerttemberg, Germany and went to York, PA. She died shortly after
arrival.

I'm told my family came over in 1732 on the Samuel August 11th from Rotterdam-Cowes
to Philly. Fredrick Mulschegel is our forefather I think. Sons Christain and Abe or
Abraham also came over on the ship . These two boys names are common in the 250 year
history of the family, does anyone have any info on what the paasenger did after
leaving the ship in Philly 1732?
I traced the original Wollenslagel name to 1780 but a gap exists between 1732

Hello, I have recently found that my 4x great grandfather was on board the ship Samuel which arrived
in Pennsylvania in 1732. Joseph Christian Gochnauer (listed as Christian on the manifest) came over
with his brother Jacob and his brother's wife Kathrina. They were probably from the Baden area,
Germany. They settled in Lancaster Co. and raised large families which spread across the country.
I have a facsimile of the original ship's manifest in my records as well.
