*Many ships are only listed with men, yet many came with their wives,
children, sister, etc, but these names were either not recorded or
not saved. Only males over the age of 16 were allowed to sign the
oaths, so these would be the names on Strasburger & Hinke's lists.
The early ships before 1727 you most likely will only see the oaths
lists. As time went on and the captains were forced to record all
passengers, you will often see the entire list of males, females and
children. The law to record these was passed in 1727, but obviously
not enforced until later. Other places you may find ship lists not
recorded in S & H might be Philadelphia newspapers of the time.
Look at this list carefully. Spellings are as found in the record
and spellings for the same surnames vary! These have been alphabetized,
so they are not as found in the record. The signatures have attempted to
be matched with the appropriate person in the ship list, but please
use your own judgement on these "matches"!!

I located my father's great-grandfather (and possibly his wife) on
your manifest list. He and his wife sailed on the Lydia. His name is
listed as Johannes Weele, age 17. The second column represents the
correct spelling with a (+) mark - WELLER.
Unfortunately, no names or records have been uncovered with Johannes'
wife's name. I would assume there was more than one child. However,
one son, John Weller married Bertha. John and Bertha Weller had two
sons, Jospeh Sebastian Weller and Steve Weller.
Joseph Sebastian Weller married Anna Catherine Perch. Joseph and Ann
Weller had eight children: Ruth, Joseph, Anna, Steve, Marie, Edwin,
Dorothy and Richard.
It does not seem that any of the Weller's stayed in Philadelphia. All
stemmed from Brooklyn, New York.

Correspondence December 8, 2003 passenger Hench
Johannes Hench has been found to have many spellings for his last name.
He settled in Chester Springs, Chester County, PA after arriving on the
Ship Lydia on Sept 19, 1743. It is said he was a stowaway who worked
for his passage to America. After getting his farm established he
returned to Germany where he married Christiana Schneider and returned
to America on the ship Chesterfield. He and Christins had 7 children,
5 sons and 2 daughters. All 5 sons served in the Revolutionary War.
Two of them, Peter and Henry were captured and died on a ship in
New York harbor. Christina died as a result of typhus which she got
while tending soldiers at Yellow Springs hospital after the battle of
Brandywine. He lost his farm due to a shyster not recording his and
others as buyers. He then moved to Academis, Juniata County until his
death. Shirley Shope
