Robert Colpitts information is nicely outlined in William S. Hoar's book
"Steeves and Colpitts Pioneers of the Upper Petitcodiac. Mr. Hoar's
associated with Tangled Roots Press. Also the "John" family issued a
book on their line (out of print)
From several sources I do have the names of Robert Colpitts and Margaret
Wade's children. My connection is their fourth child Thomas (1773-1849)
married to Eunice Reynolds of Lubec, Maine.
Robert Colpitts was married in England 10 Feb. 1768 to Margard Wade and
they made their home at or near Norton, Durham Co., England. When
Robert boarded the Jenny he left behind his wife and three children. It
is said reports had been received from cousins who landed in Nova Scotia
in 1774 of the fine lands in NS. Robert being a cautious man wanted to
see the land for himself before uprooting his family. Robert was
impressed by the land around the Petitcodiac River a short distance up
river from Moncton. He returned to England and made preparations for
bringing his family to Canada but the war had broken out between England
and her American colonies and was not permitted to return to Canada
until after the war in 1783. Upon returning to New Brunswick Robert
found that the land he had cleared and cabin he built had been taken
over by others, so decided to settle on Little River on an intervale
covered with rock maple trees. The community bears the name Colpitts
Settlement.
Note: Christopher Horsman arrived on the Jenny also settled in the same
area as Robert Colpitts. Arlene
